Practical download-speed targets
These are sensible starting points per active stream, not guarantees. Actual demand depends on codec, frame rate and bitrate. Leave headroom for normal household activity instead of sizing the connection to the exact minimum.

Samsung’s current UK connectivity guidance uses at least 25 Mbps as a general 4K recommendation. Treat that as a baseline and allow more when several people are online.
Calculate simultaneous household demand
Add the target for every stream that may run at the same time, then add roughly 25% headroom for browsing, updates and normal variation. For example, two Full HD streams at 15 Mbps each need 30 Mbps; with headroom, aim for at least 38 Mbps available to the devices. This is a planning estimate, not a promise of playback quality.
Your subscription’s connection allowance is separate. Broadband capacity for three streams does not grant permission to use three concurrent connections.
Why speed alone does not stop buffering
Streaming needs data to arrive consistently. Packet loss forces retransmission, high latency delays responses, and jitter means the delay varies. Weak Wi-Fi can create all three even when the broadband package is fast. A short speed-test result is therefore one clue, not the whole diagnosis.
Ofcom’s UK reporting also distinguishes speed delivered to the router from the experience on household devices. Wi-Fi, wiring, in-home congestion and remote content servers can affect the final result.
How to test the right way
- Run three tests on the affected TV or streaming device at different times.
- Repeat while the problem normally occurs.
- Pause large downloads and compare the result.
- Compare Ethernet, if possible, to isolate Wi-Fi.
- Record download speed, latency and packet loss rather than keeping only the best result.
Improve the connection without buying a new package first
- Move the router into the open and away from thick walls or electrical interference.
- Use 5 GHz for stronger short-range performance and 2.4 GHz for longer range.
- Use Ethernet for a fixed TV installation where practical.
- Pause console downloads, cloud backups and device updates during testing.
- Restart and update the streaming device, player and router.
- Follow the buffering decision tree before changing multiple settings.
